These kings will rise to power and dominate the earth. The latter prophecy of Daniel 7 adds many more details than were revealed in chapter 2. 80 During my school teaching days, I tried to make my students think I had eyes in the back of my head so that no matter what they did--even if my back was turned--they could not escape my all-seeing eyes or my discipline. The head of the statue was made of gold, the chest and arms of silver, the belly and thighs of bronze, and the legs and feet of iron and clay. Nebuchadnezzar may have started badly, but by the time we read of him in Daniel 4 he seems to be a true believer in God, urging the citizens of his kingdom to worship and serve Him. a. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:89, NASB95)[7] You have a responsibility because you know what the end will bring. 15 And there was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast might even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed (Revelation 13:4, 11-15). Through the ages, the saints have learned that they must wait for the promises of God to be fulfilled and that this may not happen in their lifetime (see Hebrews 11:13-16, 39-40). Never in the history of the Roman empire has this happened so it is yet future. What God determined to reveal to Daniel should be enough for us. Prophecy is not a pep rally, which generates a great burst of short-term enthusiasm but does little to inspire faith and endurance in the midst of suffering. The first recorded vision comes to Daniel in the form of a night vision, like those of Nebuchadnezzar (2:1; 4:5) during the first year of the reign of Belshazzar. Prophecy is necessary then so that men are reassured of divine deliverance and blessing, as well as divine judgment (see 2 Peter 2:4-9). Two major divisions comprise our text: (1) Daniels dreamverses 1-14 and (2) the interpretationverses 15-28. When the Lord Jesus Christ came to earth, having added perfect humanity to His undiminished deity, He spoke of Himself very often as the Son of Man. In the Gospels, Jesus began not only to identify Himself as the Messiah, the promised Son of Man, but also to explain all that this involved. Daniel urged them to pray for mercy from the God of heaven, . Daniel still dreaming said he approached one of those standing there. The point of this prophecy is not to tell us who future kings will be, but rather what they will be like. He will keep continual pressure on the saints of the Highest One to try to break and destroy and annihilate them. The beasts are hardly worthy of prose, but the court of heaven deserves a description of the finest words. As I stated two weeks ago the leopard was noted for its swiftness and the two pairs of wings suggests added swiftness beyond the animals own ability. (5) Prophecy is not written as hype but revealed to produce the hope of glory and endurance in present tribulation. I also told you it corresponded to the dream of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel chapter 2, but with more detail. It therefore seems that the two prophecies speak of the same four kingdoms by means of different imagery. (3) What principles should guide and govern our attempt to interpret the prophecy of this chapter? But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be taken away, annihilated and destroyed forever. I did not include the insert today because I have already included it several times. This beast is also unique among the four in that he grows 11 horns. Each beast has its own unique characteristics. I have heard a number of attempts to explain the gaps in Old Testament prophecy. Neither peer opposition nor the king's new law (chapter 6) greatly disturbed Daniel. Remembering this avoids confusion. 9 I kept looking until thrones were set up, And the Ancient of Days took His seat; His vesture was like white snow, And the hair of His head like pure wool. He staying the decree is brought to the king. Those who will reign with Christ are those who have suffered (see Romans 8:17; Philippians 3:10-11; 2 Timothy 2:12). Thirdly (and most importantly), the prophecies of Daniel mean exactly what God says they mean, nothing more and nothing less. When that day comes for them, it is too late to repent. ET. The saints should neither believe nor behave on the basis of how things appear to be (the wicked prospering and prevailing over the righteous). Daniel described the beast as having iron teeth and that it devours, crushes, and tramples under its feet all that stands in its way. The fourth beast appears to differ from the other three in that he is more beastly, more powerful, more destructive, and more arrogant. The angel that Daniel was talking with gave Daniel greater detail concerning the fourth beast; he described this fourth beast as a fourth kingdom coming from the earth, it will be different from all the rest, this kingdom will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. The statue has four parts; there are four beasts. (11) What is the point of the vision? In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. The beasts emerge out of chaos and confusion; the heavenly court is calm and dignified. Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would show the king the interpretation. Daniel himself had many dreams and visions, mostly related to future kingdoms of the world and the . God has revealed in this interpretation what He wants us to know and has kept back that which we need not know. Alexandra was also intrigued by the profession Spencer was in, which made her want to spend more time with him. Salvation is likewise a process involving sufferingand then glory. He is more beastly in the beginning and more human in the end, paralleling the character of Nebuchadnezzar. No wonder His words stung and prompted them to act as they did. Jesus quoted the words of Daniel 7:13. The final words of verse 25 are carefully chosen to let the reader know that while this king appears to be successfully opposing God, all he does is a part of the divine plan for the last days. Daniel was not satisfied with just a summary of his dream, especially of the fourth beast that was so different than the other three, he wanted more detail. The gap is not the prophets problem; it is ours. Agreeing with God that they are sinners but believing that Jesus Christ death paid the penalty for their sin, that He was buried, and rose from the dead three days later triumphant over sin, Satan, and death forever. (9) The interpretation of Daniels vision comes in two parts, beginning with a general interpretation and then a more specific one based on Daniels questions. 15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me. - As for these four children, God gave them knewledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.Or, as the words might be more accurately rendered, "these lads, the four of them" (Ezekiel 1:8-10).This indicates that somehow they were separated off into a quaternion. The precise meaning of the symbols of the raised side and the three ribs is illusive. Our Lords first coming happened over a period of more than 30 years, and yet we view this as one coming. Yet, his emotional response was valid and changed little after the vision was explained more fully. The vision comes to Daniel in Belshazzars first year.78 A subsequent and related vision comes to him in this kings third year (see 8:1). Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? Even the fate of this fourth beast is different than his three predecessors, as his life and his kingdom seem to end at the same moment. Nebuchadnezzar's Dream ( Daniel 2:1-16) Say: Some time later, the King had a dream. In Gods economy, things are not what they appear to be. If taken seriously, we will find the future sobering as well. 2 Daniel said, I was looking in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. It was said ( ch. Prophecy is always practical and relevant to the person(s) receiving it. Daniel 2:1-13 - Nebuchadnezzar's Dream. If a man cannot remember the dream he saw (it means): his (personal) god is angry with him. Subsequent revelations in the Book of Daniel which Daniel received were closely associated with some kind of agony or distress (see 8:17, 27; 9:20-21; 10:2-3, 7-10, 17; 12:8). The account of the writing on the wall and the death of Belshazzar (obviously the last year of his reign) is found in Daniel 5. As the destruction of the last beast and the blaspheming horn came as a complete shock to them, so the Lords coming will catch unbelievers unprepared as well (24:27-39). (5) While the process involves wicked kings and nations and the suffering of the saints, the culmination is the establishment of Gods eternal kingdom. So King Nebuchadnezzar honored God's men. His disciples were promised that they would share in His reign as King (19:20). For the remainder of Nebuchadnezzars life, it seems that religion in the kingdom of Babylon was at least favorable to the worship of the God of the Jews. This kings boasting turns to blasphemy. Daniel 2:9-11 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof, Daniel 1:18,19 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar, We are not told in so many words that this extension of time was granted, or that Daniel undertook to show more than the interpretation of the dream. We know that Jesus came the first time to die and that He will come again to subdue His enemies and establish His kingdom. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief; 5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. Then the kingdoms of the earth, the sovereignty, the dominion, the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heavens, in other words, the whole world will be given to the saints of the Highest One and the Highest One, Jesus Christ, will rule and it will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him. The day of judgment is still future and has not yet been fulfilled. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of these things: 17 These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings who will arise from the earth. Daniel 7 indicates in the clearest way that prior to the coming of the kingdom of God the saints will suffer at the hand of the final horn and even be overpowered by him. We could never predict the goals God has determined, nor the means He has ordained for history to reach them. Daniel finds nothing to compare to it. The king knew that Daniel spoke the truth. (6) None of the kings or the kingdoms are identified. They surely knew this text to be messianic, but they had always applied it to the Gentiles. Prophecy reveals that which we would not and could not expect apart from divine revelation. Who are these saints that the angel is speaking of? 11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 states, For they themselves report about us what kind of a reception we had with you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come. (1 Thessalonians 1:910, NASB95)[6] Finally, the more we know about the future, the more our hearts should be moved to prayerful petition for those who will face the judgment of God if they do not turn in faith to Jesus Christ. Je. The other prophecies were revealed to King Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar and interpreted by Daniel. 5. Different from the first three, this beast seems uglier, more powerful, and much more hostile toward God and His saints. These are the things Daniel sees in the vision. And it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and thus they said to it, Arise, devour much meat! 6 After this I kept looking, and behold, another one, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird; the beast also had four heads, and dominion was given to it. (8) The four beasts are all different, with the last standing apart from the first three. Remember Daniel was in his 60s when he received this revelation. If not, he could never have become airborne again. 75 Everything in chapter 7 is on a world-wide scale, the empires of the beasts, the judgment, and the nations that worship and serve the one like mortal man. From an eternal perspective, the coming of Christ and His kingdom is but one coming. We have already seen time frame in Revelation referring to half of the seven-year tribulation. Dwight Pentecost writes, The existence of the church in the present Age was nowhere revealed in the Old Testament. In his vision, the statue collapsed and disappeared, because a mysterious stone struck it at its feet. While God tells neither Daniel nor us that this beast represents Nebuchadnezzar, He does reveal that the head of gold in the vision of the great statue was Nebuchadnezzar (2:36-38). Neither is prophecy written to make us happy or to feel good. As we shall show later, the content of the prophecy of Daniel 7 is very closely related to the reign of Belshazzar. Chapter 7 - In the first vision Daniel sees the same kingdoms, but this time he sees them as beasts. That dream was read as our Scripture reading this morning. (6) How important is it for us to identity the kings and the kingdoms mentioned in our text? The prophecies of Daniel 7 speak of a future day of reckoning, foreshadowed by the actions of Belshazzar and the judgment of God on him and his kingdom. When they came in and stood before the king, 3 The angel told Daniel that at the end of those three and a half years the court would sit for judgment and the dominion (a word in Aramaic that means kingdom or empire and the citizens or subjects of that empire) would be taken away from the Antichrist, and the Antichrist and his followers will be annihilated and destroyed forever. The First Vision is a dream of the king that is interpreted by Daniel. But the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come. (Daniel 7:1718, NASB95)[2] The four beasts that Daniel saw in his dream were four kings and represented the four kingdoms of these kings. Belshazzar came to power several years after the death of Nebuchadnezzar and seems to have turned completely away from the God of Israel. Liberals reject all prophecies, because they require a sovereign God and a miraculous revelation of future events. The second and third beasts are briefly described in verses 5 and 6. When mentioning the little horn that grew up and uprooted three of the first ten horns, Daniel now tells us that this little horn grew until it was larger in appearance then the remaining seven horns. We dare not ignore that which is revealed nor do we dare go too far afield in speculating about what is concealed (see Deuteronomy 29:29; 1 Timothy 1:4; 2 Timothy 2:23). As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings will arise; and another will arise after them, and he will be different from the previous ones and will subdue three kings. God grants this king success and his saints suffering, but only for an appointed time. When God granted Daniel the wisdom to interpret the king's dream, it launched Daniel's long career as a political leader, trusted adviser, and well-known prophet. (5) What do the four beasts represent? From the context, it would seem that Daniels distress is the result of the wickedness and oppression of the world kingdoms which are represented by the beasts, and by the knowledge that the saints will be oppressed and even overcome for a period of time. Verse 17. The subject of the vision in chapter 2 seems to be taken up again in chapter 7. (4) Prophecies not completely fulfilled cannot be fully understood until after their fulfillment. 23 Thus he said: The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the other kingdoms, and it will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. Daniels vision ends here, but its impact on him does not end. Editing is often evident in the Bible (see John 20:30-31; 31:25). He had endured the training of the Chaldeans and he had lived his life in the service of a foreign king, at first the foreign king who had overthrown his country. It is significant for us to note Daniels reaction to this revelation from God. (9) What is the relationship between Daniels vision in chapter 7 and the events described in Daniel 5? Gods plan and program are carried out on His schedule, not ours (see 2 Peter 2:8-10). 8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation (1 Thessalonians 5:1-8). Daniel's righteousness is legendary status Don't mistake Daniel as some conjurer of cheap tricks. 79 Compare Jeremiah 49:14-22, 28, where Nebuchadnezzar is compared to a lion and an eagle. Quite clear, however, is the identity of the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man.. 25 And he will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. In our passage, Daniel asks for and receives an explanation. He could not figure out what the dream meant, so he wanted his advisors to explain it to him. He couldn't sleep. It should be remembered that many narratives of scripture are related in a very condensed form, fuller details being added afterwards. The righteous will suffer. Having related the dream, Daniel then interprets it: it concerns four successive kingdoms, beginning with Nebuchadnezzar, which will be replaced by the everlasting kingdom of the God of heaven. Abraham had to believe and behave on the basis of Gods promises, rather than on the basis of his perception. The use of the word time in Daniel is understood to be years. Who is the Son of Man? In the context of the coming of His kingdom and the suffering and trials which precede it, soberness is a vitally important quality which prophecy promotes: 1 Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. Episode 5 of "How I Met Your Father" Season 2 tested the friendships of everyone in the group. Daniel uses the expression Son of man twice. Desiring a more detailed explanation, he apparently asked for one and received it. The kingdom of God would not be established in Daniels lifetime, nor in the life of those who returned to the land of Israel from their captivity. The message of this prophecy is really quite simple and may be summed up this way. These horns are also kings, from whom kingdoms arise (verse 24). His thoughts alarm him, and his face pales. In verse 1 Daniel indicates his vision came to him in the first year of the reign of Belshazzar. The second time, the expression is used in reference to Daniel himself, as it will be used very frequently in Ezekiel to refer to this great prophet: So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; but he said to me, Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end (Daniel 8:17). This was when his life took a sharp turn. When we expect it least, the Lord will return, the wicked will be punished, and the kingdom of God established forevermore. Child-bearing is a process which involves suffering and glory. (8) Is there any relationship between Nebuchadnezzars dream in chapter 2 and Daniels dream in chapter 7? The expression, son of man, is not new to Daniel nor to the Jews of his day. (2) The prophecies of Daniel must be understood in relationship to and in light of the other prophecies of Daniel. Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. So, this phrase refers to 3 years. Considering this text has changed my opinion about the gap in the prophecies of the Old Testament. He only called on him in a moment of sheer panic when no one else could help, and only then because of the recommendation of the queen mother. We are not to base our thinking and actions on circumstances, but upon the Scriptures. When Jesus came, He embraced this expression as a designation for Himself, giving the term meaning vastly beyond that previously held by any Jew. It seems that three of the kings try to resist him and he overthrows them by force. Twice in chapter 7 Daniel speaks of his distress: As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me (verse 15). (4) Suffering is to be expected by the saints, before they enter into the glorious kingdom of God. (2) Chapters 7 and 8, while written in different languages, are written during the reign of Belshazzar and somehow linked by the author in Daniel 8:1. There seems to be a close connection between the vision of Nebuchadnezzar, which is revealed and interpreted in chapter 2, and the vision of Daniel in chapter 7. (2) While the timing of the fulfillment of divine prophecy may seem remote to the recipient, it still has relevance for him. The Son of Man was also Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8). How interesting! Daniel 2:24-49 New International Version Daniel Interprets the Dream 24 Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, "Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. The other seven will then likely submit out of fear or a sense of the unavoidable consequences of resisting represented by this little horn growing larger than the seven. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire. Wherever I see the Scriptures speak of the coming kingdom of God, I find suffering closely associated with it. God would strike him down suddenly too and bring his kingdom to a swift end. 81 See Ezekiel 29:21 for a similar use of the imagery of making a horn grow to describe a kings promotion to power. Daniels response to the vision was far from assuring or calming. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. Daniel 2: Nebuchadnezzar's Dream by Larry Murray King Nebuchadnezzar had a puzzling dream that no one could explainuntil God gave the interpretation to Daniel. Daniel 2:26-49 (Numbers 23:19). God would strike him down in the moment of His choosing to silence him once and for all and put an end to his kingdom. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Daniel made it very clear that the dream and the interpretation had come for the one true God. There is fairly strong inferential evidence that Nebuchadnezzar was represented by the first beast, the winged lion. The emphasis of this brief interpretation falls not on the enemies of God, their power, their brutality, nor their boasting, but on the kingdom of God, its certainty and its permanence for all the saints forever. He distinguishes himself by his ability to overcome the whole earth, crushing it under foot. The beasts are a horrifying and frightening sight; the heavenly court scene is one of regal splendor and beauty.
